What is a data scientist?
Data science is a branch of computer science that encompasses a wide range of techniques aimed at extracting insights and knowledge from data. It combines elements of statistics, mathematics, and computer science to analyze and interpret complex data sets.
Data scientists are responsible for collecting, cleaning, and organizing data, as well as developing algorithms and models to uncover patterns and trends that can drive decision-making processes.
Despite its growing popularity, data science is still considered a relatively new major. Not all colleges offer data science programs, which can make it challenging for students interested in pursuing this field to find suitable educational opportunities. However, the increasing demand for data-driven insights across various industries has led to a surge in data science programs in recent years.

Steps to take during high school
Fundamental Classes
Taking foundational coding and data classes, such as AP Statistics and AP Computer Science A, is crucial for aspiring data scientists. These courses lay the groundwork for a solid understanding of the fundamental principles and techniques used in data analysis and interpretation.
Understanding statistical concepts such as probability, hypothesis testing, and regression analysis is vital for making informed decisions based on data. Moreover, proficiency in programming languages like Python or R is essential for data manipulation, visualization, and modeling.
Proficiency in fundamental mathematical concepts is essential for individuals aspiring to pursue a career as a data scientist. It is advisable to take advanced Calculus and Algebra courses to strengthen these foundational mathematic skills.
Extracurriculars
One way to enhance your interest and skills in data science and coding is by actively participating in data science and coding related clubs. If your school does not have a club dedicated to data science, consider taking the initiative to establish one.
Learning about AI may be beneficial as it is a rapidly expanding field in the realm of computer science. If you are interested in learning more about AI, you can refer to my previous blog post where I discuss learning AI in high school:

Summer
If you're looking to gain more research experience, it's a good idea to sign up for summer research programs. Check if your nearby college has any research courses or an intro to research class that you can take.
Summer internships can offer high school students valuable insights into potential career paths and help them gain practical experience in a professional setting.
While it may seem challenging for high schoolers to secure internships due to the competitive nature of the process, there are several strategies they can employ to increase their chances of success. Networking with professionals in their field of interest, reaching out to local businesses or organizations, and utilizing online platforms dedicated to connecting students with internship opportunities are all effective ways for high school students to find valuable internships.
